Terrazzo floors are made with fragments of stones and marble. This type of flooring had its golden age in the 60's and, although recently you can find some similar patterns for tiles or floors, if you are thinking of renewing yours to give it a new life, we tell you one of the options with which you can do it. The Water Based Epoxy Paint for Interior Floor Paintings is an IDEAL OPTION for this.
1. 4 steps to follow to paint a terrazzo floor and give it a new look
The process to paint and restore a terrazzo floor with a water-based epoxy paint is not complex, but you must take into account all the steps to follow to get the right result. To begin with, you must take into account that the support must be clean, free of grease and oils and completely dry.
Once you prepare your terrazzo floor, just follow these 4 steps and you will be able to give a radical change to your space:
- We recommend sanding the surface of the terrazzo floor beforehand. The ideal is to use a medium grit sandpaper to mattify the surface and promote adhesion.
- The second step to follow is to repair all the cracks and joints that you find in the floor, being able to do this process with an Epoxy Putty. Once the putty is dry, sand those areas to eliminate imperfections and clean the dust generated.
- With the substrate clean, apply a coat of primer using the product Epoxy resin primer pack applied at a rate of about 100 g/m2.
- After 12 hours to respect the repainting time of the primer, we can begin the application of two coats of Eurotex water based epoxy paint. For this we will use a Two-component waterborne epoxy enamel for painting interior floors that require high mechanical and chemical resistance. It is recommended to apply a total product yield of 500 g/m2 in two coats (between 150 - 250 g/m2 per coat), expecting a recoating time between coats of between 12 and 48 hours at 23ºC.
Instructions for use of Water-Based Epoxy Enamel: The product is presented in pre-dosed batches, respecting the mixing ratio to the maximum. The mixing operation of the components is carried out mechanically until a homogeneous mixture is obtained, using a low speed mixer (600 rpm) equipped with propellers that do not favor the entrance of air to avoid the formation of bubbles.
First beat each of the components separately and then pour the component from the small container or component B into the large container or component A, beating the mixture until it is completely homogenized (approximately 1-2 minutes).
While the mixture is being stirred, add water slowly as a diluent until the adequate viscosity for the application is achieved (do not add more than 10 % of water). It should be taken into account that the pot-life of the mixture depends on the temperature (the higher the temperature, the lower the pot-life and vice versa). Apply with a roller, ensuring the formation of a continuous layer without pores.

2. TIPS for Removing a Terrazzo Floor with an Epoxy Paint
- Before starting the whole process, we recommend a superficial sanding with medium grain sandpaper to mattify the surface and favor the adherence.
- It is also advisable to allow about 24 hours after the terrazzo floor has been painted. This is when the paint will have cured sufficiently to withstand moderate foot traffic again.
- Keep in mind that epoxy paint or resin, by nature, yellows when exposed to solar radiation, so this type of coating is recommended only for indoor application.

- Sanding and degreasing of the surface (then rinse with water).
- Application of a coat of epoxy primer adhesion promoter at 100 g/m2.
- Respecting the time of repainting (about 12 hours), apply two coats of water-based epoxy enamel, with which you have the option to choose color based on RAL chart.

The water-based epoxy enamel, as we pointed out in the article, should not be applied outdoors, since epoxies are not stable to U.V. radiation from the sun. For this, we recommend following the same process, changing the epoxy paint for polyurethane paint aggressive environments.

You should always respect the drying or commissioning time of our products, but you can speed up the drying by increasing the room temperature and ventilating.

For the treatment of floors with epoxy resin in interiors, we have three types of primers:
- Water-based epoxy primer: to saturate cement or concrete support and seal the pore.
- Wollmon E100: self-leveling epoxy primer for when it is necessary to regularize the substrate before applying the finishing epoxy resin.
- Epoxy adhesion promoter primer: for non-porous substrates.
In the technical data sheet of each product, you can find the recommended application performance and with it you can calculate the performance.
Once the substrate is prepared, the 3D epoxy resin or liquid porcelain can be applied. To calculate the consumption of the resin is simple, since generally the consumption in a support with good planimetry is usually between 1 and 1.5 kg/m2 to obtain 1mm or 1.5 mm of thickness. That is to say, if we have a floor of 12 m2, it will need between 12 and 18 kg in total. Its application should be done with a notched metal trowel.

Buenos dias. Quiero pintar unas escaleras interiores de terrazo, pero también quisiera que quedaran antideslizantes.
Puedo mezclar la pintura epoxi al agua con algún antideslizante? Debería pintar primero con epoxi y una vez seco aplicar la pintura antideslizante? o al contrario?
Si no es así hay algún otro producto que pueda aplicar

la mejor solución que te podemos ofrecer es, teniendo en cuenta que el terrazo no es poroso y necesitamos un promotor de adherencia, el sistema sería utilizar nuestra Imprimación Promotora de Adherencia PU, seguido de Barnipur W615 y sobre el Barnipur aditivar el aditivo antideslizante.
